Cycling '74 offers permanent, subscription, and upgrade licenses of Max and RNBO for institutional customers.
These licenses are supported differently than the individual consumer licenses purchased directly from our online shop. The primary differences between institutional licenses and individual consumer licenses are extended transferability, unique authorization methods, and access to license management tools. For further information on the differences between licenses, please see this article.
What are the Max & RNBO pricing options for institutions?
We offer permanent, subscription, and upgrade licenses of Max and RNBO, with discounts for higher quantities. Our bulk discounts are cumulative, not per order. For example, if you already own five permanent Max licenses (versions 7-9), then decide to purchase five more licenses, that purchase would receive the discounted rate for 10-49 licenses, since your new total number of Max licenses would be 10. The total number (how many you already have + how many you wish to buy) determines which quantity rate you receive.
To see a full rundown of our quantity pricing, please refer to our Institutions Shop page.
Which versions of Max count towards our total number of permanent licenses?
Permanent licenses of Max 7-9 count towards your total number of licenses. If you own five Max 7 licenses, and four Max 8 licenses, you would have a total of 9 licenses. If you then purchased one Max 9 licenses, that purchase would receive the discounted rate for 10-49 licenses, since your new total number of Max licenses would be 10. Max 4-6 licenses do not count towards your total.
Is there a minimum number of licenses required for an order?
No. You can purchase 1 to 100+ licenses!
Who qualifies for institutional pricing?
We will provide institutional licenses to any school, enterprise, or non-profit organization that requires access to license management tools.
How do I purchase institutional licenses?
First, check out our Institutions Shop page, which provides information on quantity pricing. To request an official quote or invoice, you can either email us directly at sales@cycling74.com, or fill out the Sales Contact form on our website.
Please note that our bulk discounts are cumulative, not per order. We count how many licenses you already own (for Max, only versions 7-9 qualify), plus how many you wish to buy, and that total determines which quantity rate you receive.
How long will it take to process my order?
Orders for institutional licenses are processed manually by our Sales Support team. We generally process orders within 24-72 hours, from 9am to 5pm Pacific Time Monday - Friday. Once an order is fully processed and an invoice is sent, you can expect to receive authorization instructions with 24 hours.
What is the pricing currency?
Cycling '74 is based in the United States, therefore all quotes and invoices will be calculated in US Dollars (USD).
Can I purchase in a different currency?
If you need to purchase Max and/or RNBO for your institution in a different currency, you may purchase from an international reseller.
My institution already owns licenses. How can I see what we own?
If you own Max 7-9 licenses, it's likely that you have an institutional account in our Admin Portal. The administrator on your account can sign in to the Admin Portal with their Cycling '74 user account, then a full list of your licenses will be displayed on the left side of your account.
If you are unable to sign in, or if you only own older Max licenses (versions 4-6), please email us at sales@cycling74.com with the full name of your institution. We will be happy to look up your licenses for you.
What if my institution owns Ableton Live? Can we get the Ableton Customer discount on Max?
No, we do not offer the Ableton customer discount to institutions. That discount is only available for single-user ownership.
What is the difference between an Institutional license and a Student license?
Institutional licenses are not the same as Student licenses. An important distinction is that Institutional licenses are registered to and owned by a school or enterprise, not an individual student. For a full rundown on the differences between licenses, please see this article.
How are institutional licenses authorized?
Cycling '74 has four different options for how institutions can authorize Max 7-9, and RNBO licenses: Activation Codes, Keyfile, iLok, and KeyServer. You can choose one of these options, or mix and match. For further information, please see our article Authorization Options for Institutions.
